PostSubject: R53 scuttle vent replacement   3rd May 2011, 13:26

I'm looking at replacing the scuttle vents (the black plastic honeycomb ones) on my R53 with some new ones.

Has anyone done this? Any useful tips on how to remove the current vents without damaging the surrounding paintwork?

Good luck with the sale, but I already have the new vents.

Bought them second hand at the Aintree show last year but have only just got round to thinking about fitting them.

I was just wondering if there was any particular technique to removing the old ones, as the instructions with the new ones aren't too helpful.

Each grill has 3 hooks along its' front edge and 4 sprung plastic clips along its' rear.
It's a little awkward to do but there's generally just enough clearance under the bonnet to get ones hand to the back of each grill to press the clips in and gradually spring the back of them from the bodywork. The off side one is easier as there's a little more clearance, mind the edges of the wiper linkage rods though, they can be sharp! The nearside is a little more tricky as you have to contend with the ABS pump and the brake pipes in the way.

One of the 4 clips on the back edge of each grill.

All the foam rotted on mine and worryingly they ping out really easily.
Are they available at main dealers does anyone know?

The ones with the foam inserts were discontinued round about 2003 due to the rotting problem.

Had this on my 2001 Cooper, the foam went within 18 months from new.

BMW then replaced them with the black plastic honeycomb ones which should still be available.

Ahh right. Well I was thinking of just re-foaming them if you will but if the honeycombs are available ill probs just do a full on replacement. The plastic on my bits have faded something chronic too. Lol.
Poor car was sat not really being used for 4 years until I bought it.
