Hate it.

Am I the only person in the world who thinks that Mini should just make the regular three door hatch and stop with all these pointless derivatives like this and the Countryman?

Ruination of the brand.

I thought this too, but then I realised how you feel is exactly what classic mini enthusiasts thought about the ones we love.

Neil some of your points are valid in terms of brand image, i for one never liked the r56 over the r53 yet stick coilovers on the r56 looks like a mini and not a 4wd bus Very Happy

I wonder where it's been developed?

Although I guess it's just a Challenge MINI with a different body Very Happy

Annie loves the racing coupé! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy It was one of her ideas when she saw the pro-production bodyshells of them at Plant Oxford Smile .

So now she has seen this, she now wants Very Happy And she also says Neil, tut tut heh heh x Smile

I think need to accept now that a MINI is not just one model of car, but MINI is a manufacturer of many different and diverse models in a similar way the parent company BMW makes all sorts of versions of what essentially the same 'design' style of car (quad headlamps, hofmeister kink, etc) Wink

I think it's probably best to agree to disagree. The rest of the Mini range is marmite, most people love it, I bloody hate it. Even the salesman in my local dealership isn't a fan of the countryman Laughing

Despite our banter Neil, you do raise very relevant points. Smile In 1959 the Mini was really designed mainly for the UK market, whilst especially these latest variants of the MINI have to appeal to the 82 other markets where the car is sold, and of course in many in which as far as the car buying public there is concerned the Mini did not exist prior to 2001 (i.e the USA).

I can't really think of any other car where this type of discussion takes place. As in the UK the Mini is close to our hearts and people feel passionate if the brand in moving away from their own personal feeling. Smile However, development of the Mini brand into different bigger models is not without president.

Whatever BMW look at with the MINI, there is arguably a similar Mini-based or influenced model made by BMC in the 1960's!

Where shall we start? Smile MINI Beachcomber Concept.

I present you with the Mini Beach Car! Smile

Ok, what about the proper MINI Countryman?

Well how about the Issigonis designed Austin 1800? Again, using the front wheel drive idea's from the Mini, but with bigger, more space inside, and some controversial exterior styling! Smile

I could go on, but you get my point! Very Happy

Agreed Chris, but at least the original cars from the sixties were actually functional - the original Mini was a packaging marvel, and the 1800 (or landcrab!) was the same.

Unfortunatley the modern interpretations are nothing more than fashion nonsense. Don't get me wrong, I love the new Mini, I just think all the new versions are stretching the brand far further than it can possibly go.

Incidentally - this is a fab website for all things BMC/BL/Rover etc - www.aronline.co.uk

I agree that there is a strong argument in what you say Neil. Smile The Coupe, Roadster, and the many new models based around the next Gen 3 Mini and beyond, will continue to sell in strong numbers and hopefully keep everyone at Plant Oxford (and in Austria) in business for many years to come! Very Happy

Agree with you about AROnline! Brilliant site. Development history of the MINI is well worth a read if you have not see it already. Smile

BMC/BL/Rover would have added this Broadspeed Coupe and MG Roadster below, based on the Mini to the production range of classic Mini variants if only they could have afforded to at the time.............as it is BMC did the Mini Moke, Van, Pickup, Clubman, Countryman/Traveller, Austin/Morris 1100/1300 range (larger Mini based) and also by Issigonis who's last design was the Maxi......BMW have been quoted that they considered the popular (in its time) BMC 1100/1300 range to also be part of the original Mini family.

Would love to, but sadly can't. Sad However I'll try to follow the live online TV stream on the 24h website, combined with the English commentary from Radio Le Mans over the race weekend. It's always an epic event! Very Happy
