PostSubject: Bonnet Insulation   12th April 2012, 15:43

I'm afraid I'm after everybody's help again. I'm still loving the car, however, one thing I will say is the engine is very noisy (assuming it's the tappets). I was looking round the internet and saw on another forum that some cars are being delivered with insulation and others not. I thought that the ones with must all be diesel, but that's not the case, it seems really quite random. I was just wondering who does and who doesn't have insulation.

My car could really benefit from this insulation, just to deaden the noise a little. I've asked a friend of mine whose a mini dealer to see what he can find out. Thanks Very Happy

Your right. Some come with and some come without. Just like the mini badge on the top of the engine. I'm conpleatly the opposite. I took mine out and threw it away the day I got my car lol.

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply.
So if we have the same engine in our respective cars, how come I think mine doesn't sound right, and you went as as to remove yours, is there something else different between our cars that I'm missing. Do some cars sound more rattly than others? Confused

Mine's a cooper s engine as well on 61 plate, so identical to yours(?). I'll mention the chain tensioner to my dealer friend, maybe get him to listen to it as well. Thanks for the advice Andy.
Will you be at the National Mini Cooper Day at Beaulieu?

I have a 61 plate JCW and it's pretty noisy on start up BUT not the tensioner rattle!

It does get a bit quieter when warmed up but think it's just the nature of the engine, they all tend to be like it........

I realise this is quite an old topic now, but we're a bit concerned about the ropey sound to our cabrio's engine generally, really.

Anyone else had issues with the 1.6S engine? We're taking ours back to the dealership tomorrow to have it looked at.

Hi Crazyj,
I installed the bonnet insulation and it had the desired effect. Not sure why it's not installed at the factory!?!
I dont think the engine any noisier than it should be, it just needed more insulation.

Have you heard back from the dealership?

Hi Elz

The dealership confirmed what you have said - no problem at all with the engine, and they only put insulation in diesel models apparently.......so I think I will go down the same route as you.

Cheers

Very Happy

Hi all, happy new year!

I've bought that very same underbonnet insulation mat for my '12 MCS after seagull 'lime' was poached onto my bonnet in April '12. (A real pig to polish out! That photo came from NAM, didn't it?)

It's mostly sold as heat insulation since the turbo makes the under-bonnet very hot. Some US NAM posters thought it was to protect bonnet stripes from degrading in the heat. One catalogue (might be R59) lists it as soundproofing, though.

Um, I can assure you that it doesn't seem to quieten my MINI's noisy DI engine. IMO it shows no audible reduction inside or out, nor does it make the bonnet 'clunk' when you shut it. But it should stop or slow paintwork being degraded by high underbonnet temperatures (noticeable on my laser blue), which is why I committed to buying it!

I found there's 3 types. The other two have a shiny reflector above the turbo; at the front for petrol and at the back for diesel derivatives. If anyone's interested I've got photos and part numbersof all 3 (at least one part no. has changed, though). I posted these on the NAM site. There's a long thread about it on there!

I wonder if there's any relation to having the insulation and having factory fitted bonnet stripes... Might prove a link...

If you look on NAM, no-one found any correlation at all. Some have have it and some haven't, it seems. One dealer thought it might be 'standard for stripes on the coupe' so one or two posters went back to their dealers and demanded that it should be fitted.

(Try holding your hand (or, preferably, someone else's) on the bonnet esp after a 'spirited' drive on a hot Summer's day...)
