PostSubject: Crack in my windscreen, any advise??   29th November 2009, 12:27

I've heard horror stories about bad screen replacements, so any recommendation in the area or things to watch out for. Will I have to make sure they replace it with an actual MINI one??

Thanks,

James.

Depends where the crack is James................

A crack will normally spread but if can be repaired, depending on many factors & where it is, the repair will not make it go away or invisable but what they do is inject some resin into it that will stop it spreading.

If you have comp insurance then they should repair/replace your screen. If replaced you will have a excess to pay normally a repair will incur no excess. Different insurers will have different excesses or rules.

Most insurers will have their own approved repairers, they could use a screen from any manufactor and not always a genuine MINI product. Some insurers allow you to use any repairer buy will normally impose a higer excess!

Best to check your policy or contact them.

But, yes I've heard of problems using non MINI windscreens.

A few things to take into account....................

The MOT specifies a windscreen area within the drivers’ immediate line of sight, known as ‘Zone A’, where any crack or damage must be contained within a 10mm diameter. It also states that any combination of minor damage that seriously restricts the drivers’ view will fail the MOT.
In addition to this area of windscreen, MOT guidelines require any chip or crack within the remainder of the area swept by the wipers to be contained within a diameter of 40mm.

The windscreen is part of the structure of the car. All cars are designed that way. It contributes to the rigidity of the car, and in some cases, a cracked windscreen can affect the operation of the passenger airbags. Passenger airbags are often designed to deploy against the windscreen glass, which guides it into the correct position in order to provide maximum occupant protection. The explosive force of a deploying airbag is capable of pushing a damaged windscreen out and the airbag will not provide the protection it is designed to give. Side windows are capable of being opened and therefore do not form part of the structure of the car.

A substantial crack can affect the roadworthiness of the car no matter where it is and therefore is ilegal.

Dave

Yeah thanks Dave. It's fairly large (4 inches probably) so not sure about a repair, and it's in the top corner on the drivers side. I'll contact my insurance soon and se what they can offer.

Cheers,

James.

When i had to chilli's replaced i just got onto my insurance company & they told me to get onto autoglass to arrange a date & my i.company will do the rest.

Replaced with no problems apart from complaining about the rac last bodge

It wasnt a mini branded one but that didnt bother me as i never had a orig mini w.screen

All i can advise is get onto your insurance & see who they use & go from there. Your normally onely have to pay your excess for new one which is normally £50 or £100

If its autoglass then i had no problems but dont touch rac variant autowindscreens

My passenger window has a scratch on it about 2 inches long and its really bugging me!

Autoglass could charge £69 just to sort it - maybe I will just have to live with it

Was the quote for replacing the glass or polishing the scratch out?

trouble is most excesses on screens are now around the £60-75 mark, so if that's just to repair I'd be inclined to have an accident and get it replaced.......... Wink
