Xenons are usually brighter than normal headlights (they often appear to have a blueish hue at night compared to other headlights). Usually they are pretty recognisable on cars!

The Bi-Xenons are also self levelling (a legal requirement for xenons as they are so bright) so you don't need to adjust the hight yourself.

Xenon bulbs use gas which electricity passes through to create light, and normal xenon headlight units usually have a normal halogen bulb for the main/full beam - this means you have 2 bulbs in them, a xenon for your dipped beam and a halogen for your main/full beam.

The difference with bi-xenon headlights is that they only have a xenon bulb which is used for both dipped and main/full beam. If you listen carefully, when you flash the headlights, you'll hear a kind of clunking noise - this is where a screen, which usually sits in the path of the light beam, is moved within the headlight unit to allow more light out basically, therefore giving you your full/main beam.

Hopefully that makes sense! Smile

Most xenon-equipped headlights are only offered as a low-beam headlight with a halogen bulb for the high beam. Bi-xenon headlights offer xenon-light output for the low and high beams, and they’re housed in the same headlight projector Smile

Bi-xenon headlights typically have a shade or filter in front of the bulb during low-beam operation. When the high-beams are needed, the shade moves out of the way and the bulb’s full-light output is projected onto the road.

Very Happy

Haha yep they come standard as part of the Chili pack on the S/JCW, or an option on the other models - 1st gen's only had the standard xenons, the bi-xenons came in with the 2nd gen Very Happy

The easy way to put it is:

normal headlights on minis: you can't see well and end up in a ditch unless theres street lighting or you eat a lot of carrots
xenons: Work well, better than halogens - spot lights are a benefit
bi-xenons: you can't tell the difference between night and day
