Same price; but not the same.

Published on 12 Apr 2013

The Mini Paceman JCW packs a 215bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive. But at nearly £30,000, it is priced identically to the brilliant BMW M135i (316bhp). The question is, can the Mini's go-kart handling justify its price tag?

Tough to disagree - neither are great looking cars but 1 Series def looks better than it did in its first iteration and impossible to argue with the performance of this new M series which looks amazing for the price....I know MINI is trying extend the premium compact niche but by offering not enough for more, both the Paceman and Countryman JCW just devalue the JCW brand.....

Personally I think the comparison should have been a JCW Coupe & the M135i

The Paceman is 4x4 so should be pitched against the X1 or similar etc.......

Just my view Smile

I still don't think it would have come out smelling of roses, but even so as the BMW is a four seater I think it would have to be the JCW hatchback.

PostSubject: Re: JCW Paceman vs. BMW M135i   11th June 2013, 11:37

Hi Guys,

I own an Estoril Blue Auto M135i and have kept my modified JCW MCS so I hope I am in a good position to compare the two.

The Paceman vs M135i review is not comparing like with like, indeed having driven both I am not sure the new GP vs the M135i would be comparing like with like either.

[img][/img][img][/img]

For go-cart fun the Mini wins hands down, it has and always will have a special place in my heart and i doubt i would ever sell it but.............the M135i is brutal, seriously brutal - leaves a Cayman R standing brutal, M3/911/RS3/RS4 worrying brutal. at £30k there is nothing to compare with it let me try and explain why.

This is a car that does 0-62 in 4.9 officially (most are doing it in 4.2 to 4.6), 316 BHP officially (Most are dynoing at 340+ standard), beautifully balanced, supremely comfortable, point and shoot steering, awesome brakes, RWD, 0-100 in less than 11 seconds............... but this is only half the story.

Insurance: 42 years old, clean licence, 2 years NCB (Second car), premium: £300 per year fully comp.......yes £300!!

Tax: 175 CO2s = Cheap road tax

MPG: Averages 34 mpg and will give up to 40 on the motorway!!!!!

Yes the looks are an acquired taste but that adds to the q car appeal for me - many a serious bit of kit tailgating me on the motorway has been a surprised to see this small 5 door hatch disappear into the distance.

The resonant chirping on the up-shift and the blips on the downshift, it the pops and bangs like a supercar. This really is a fantastic bit of kit.

Is it as iconic as the Mini? No. Does it have the same character? No.

Is it the best car I have ever owned? Absolutely.

If you're passing a dealership take one for a spin........................ if youre still not convinced dont take my word for it:

Hey Jono. I've been looking for a non MINI that might tempt me away next year, and I may have just found it - despite my hatred of the 1 series!

Mate see the South Downs Run thread if I can make it I will bring the beast!

Seriously I bought it as my work car. My current assignment is in Lytham a 5 hour drive and I can do the whole trip and walk away from the car without any additional pain (remember my back is f****d). Sooooo comfortable but when you want to play there isn't much that can match it.

it's such a good all rounder buying it was a no brainer. 30 secs into the test drive my mind was made up.

Recommend Sam at Partridges in Chandlers Ford BMW (just outside Southampton) the discount I got meant all my spec and the auto box were free.

I absolutely love the M135i. If I could afford to buy one now I would be down the dealership as soon as it opens.

I agree with the review, it seems bizarre that they are the same price, but then again it will depend on what each individual wants out of their car.

Guarantee you wont be looking at that Ipad thing whilst its doing 0-62 in 4.6secs....

I actually think it looks nicer than the popup one on the Bimmer

I need one of those AMG things... maybe in a couple of years

I probably wouldn't when doing 0-60 that quickly, that said I don't get many opportunities to stop and then do 0-60 that fast!  However I would have to look at it every time I got in, sat in traffic or went anywhere/did anything else with it.

It's a great car, but the interior is unforgivable, even if the build quality is superb!  Looks cheap and tacky, instead I'd work harder and by a C63 or XKR-S, both of which have far far superior interiors.

No worse than having a big pointless round thing stuck where I can't even see how fast it's telling me I am going!!! :-)

Talking of pretty.... How about that F Type Jag?

It's retro, and I can read it to see how fast I'm going?!

The F Type sounds great, although I'm not sure on the looks.  I think the back end is a little bland, and makes me want to stick with the XK.  Particularly one with the Speed Pack fitted!

Must say I'm not convinced by that much power from a small engine - it makes me think of evos with 4k service intervals and constant engine rebuilds.  I'll stick with either the 5.0s/c v8 or 6.3s/c v8 because I've heard the 135/335/535i have coking issues like the r56 s

Where did you hear that? Nothing on any forum or the Internet! Totally different engine to the r56...... Indeed the M135i uses the new 6 cylinder engine therefore im a bit confused by this. Sounds like a "my mate told me down the pub" statement to me :-)

Anyway coking isn't an issue on the R56 if you drive it properly I.e. giving it a good thrashing!

Seriously though each to their own that's what makes life interesting.
