PostSubject: Oil Check R56   12th May 2013, 23:48

Hi Everyone,

So on my way home this evening i went round a roundabout quite enthusiastically and heard a 'Bong' and it showed my Oil light. When i straightened up this picture went away.

Since i have got home i have had a look and apparently its a Oil Pressure Symbol and you should stop straight away. I then left the car for a bit of time and then went and checked the oil.

Now first thing is. Does anyone else have trouble reading the dipstick on the R56? Its horrible.

And secondly, if there is and issue, would the oil light stay on?

Thanks

Harry

My previous R56 did the same when it was low on oil if I went round a corner quickly it would show up on the dash for a second then go away and not stay on.

Top it up ASAP! Smile

This is what i was thinking but if its an oil pressure light, would it show up if your low? Plus when i look at the dipstick its so hard to read, i dont want to over fill it aha

Top up as you could do massive damage!

agree with all previous posts....these things chew up oil and bmw saying you need to check monthly at the very least....cite low oil as key reason for chain tensioner issues (clearly not their fault!!!!).....TM did a group buy on a craven dip stck last year - its expensive but much better design so worth it imo given how important the oil thing is....

Yes, I got the low pressure warninig on a number of righthanders & roundabouts, and the dipstick is atrocious.

Have you topped it up since you had it? You should be due a top up by now? I'm surprised if your dealer didnt warn you monthly/1000 mile top ups are the norm? Mine did and gave me a bottle of oil when I picked my clubbie up.

No. The dealer never said anything. And haven't topped up yet. Checked my oil 2 weeks ago and it seemed fine. Checked it this morning and again, it looks fine. Don't know if its all related to the issue I am allready having. Will top it up and see if I have a change. Don't want to over fill.

The car is going into mini on the 20th so I will mention it aswell

Right. Oil crisis averted.

I'm not quite sure what to put this down to. Think its going to have to be human error. I checked it two odd weeks ago and was sure it looked fine. But looking at it today, i dont see how it could have used that much oil.

Looked at it after work after the car had been left all day so was cold. Was barely on the dipstick. Luckily i had been to halfords at lunch and picked up some oil. It took nearly 2L. I couldn't believe it.

Think i need to keep a better eye on this from now on. And also find somewhere else to buy oil. It was £47 from halfords.

Just checked mine after reading this and I can't believe how hard the level on the dipstick is to read properly. Fortunately my mate used to be a main dealer mechanic and he's checked it for me and its ok for now.

The oil pressure light will come on if the oil pipe is no longer in the oil which it looks like can happen in hard cornering with low oil. If that happens your engine may be wrecked in seconds so if that light comes on and it is safe to do so then turn the engine off asap and check.

Don't engage the steering lock if you're still moving though!

Always check the oil on level ground. Depending on where the dipstick enters the sump this can make a huge difference. The car should be allowed to stand for a few minutes before checking.

Also, always you the correct grade and specification of oil. Both are mega important.

Just dropped my car to woods hampshire to be looked at. While i was there i mentioned the oil consumption. She said MINI/BMW allow 1L per 800 miles? Is this right? It seems an awful lot of oil to use.

I check mine every week!! I do it in the morning after it's been in the garage overnight. A 5 minute routine that could well save you future engine problems.
