So a bit hard to explain, but when the cars started and you drive off using low revs it sounds like somethings rubbing/rattling under the bonnet, yet as soon as the car is warm you don't hear it, likewise if you say parked and rev a little or just leave it to idle you dont hear this noise

Have looked to see what could be loose but no ideas, anyone else?

Thanks. So if it's the timing chain is this something to worry about, ie does it need immediate fix?

Thanks! !

Sounds very much like the timing chain tensioner cold start rattle that has been an issue on the R56 Cooper S.  Check to see if the car has had this work carried out by warranty from your dealer, mine was done twice.

Sounds like timing chain to me too. I'd get it looked ASAP if it was me. Or ring will at Twg for advice. 01276 22733

If tensioner it will sound like a clapped out old diesel tractor.....

They are naturally a noisy engine and more so when cold....

No it doesnt sound like that (well from what I think), dunno if you've ever heard like an M3 giving it the beans and you get this kind of fluttering sound. To me it sounds something like the heat foil (goes down the front of the cat) if rubbing under vibration but I checked that and it looks ok. Its just really odd that it doesnt do it when idleing or reving while stationary but does when you drive but only low revs (around 2500-3500) and only when its cold

Think it's well out of warranty by now, was looking for ideas. Of its this tensioner can I check this easily myself do you think?

Have you had any aftermarket products fitted, on my cooper s I've got a gtt tuning tensioner protection bracket fitted,, if the belt comes off the tensioner pulley doesn't foul bottom pulley,, it rattles on tickover and as you potter around town, just a thought .

Not the cat rattling is it ,, my one rattles 1st thing until its warmed up . If you stand outside car with engine running, just blip the throttle ,, if its the cat rattling it will sound as if the noise is level with ya ,, I know sound travels but it put my mind at ease . My 04 just short of 70k .
