Development began in 1958 with XC9002, a scaled-down version of the 1956 Issigonis XC9001 prototype. However, this was soon thought to look too much like BMC’s new Mini....

While the BMC 1100 was an Issigonis concept from the outset, it took Italy’s Pininfarina to give the car its undeniable style:

This brings back memories ... the first car I ever had regular use of was an Austin 1100 I shared with my dad back in the mid 1980s. Great little cars, and unlike Minis, you hardly ever see one around these days.

Yes, a great Issigonis designed car very closely related to the Mini, which for many years in the 1960's and early '70's was Britains best selling car, outselling the Ford Cortina as well as the Mini at the time. Sadly they were prone to rust and few survive today despite the millions sold.

Ex-MINI designer Gert Hildegard often said the BMC 1100/1300 was his favourite Mini and that BMW saw the 1100/1300 range as just bigger Mini's and part of the same Mini family range in all but name and therefore as further justification for extending the current MINI range up a size to allow buyers needing more space to stay with the brand.

And after saying you never see them around anymore, I spotted a lovely white Morris 1100 on the sea front at Rustington this afternoon  Cool
