PostSubject: Ideas for Charities to support   11th January 2010, 12:13

Another thing to come out of the AGM was that we would like to support a charity and raise money throughout the year for them.

As the amount of money is likely to be fairly small due to the nature of our club we decided we will support 1 charity a year. We would also like the charity to be local to Surrey or the South East. They can be any charity you want, and once I have a list we will vote on which one people would like to raise money for.

So, could you please pm me your ideas and include a web link if there is one so we all have a bit more info.

Thanks very much,

James. Smile

Brilliant, I've been most looking forward to us supporting a charity Very Happy

If anyone has any personal reasons to support a certain charity, or type of charity, post up why to, if someone has had amazing service from a charity we want to know so we can help them Smile

I have not had any experience with any local charities. But Cancer Charities or Hospices are good as everyone at some point has been affected by cancer.

I do think that supporting a local charity is great and especially if it is one that has helped one of us or our family.

I have a few ideas, but unfortunately they're more national charities - I'll post them up anyway, just as an idea / to give some ideas Smile

Leukaemia Research - www.lrf.org.uk My grandad was diagnosed with leukaemia when I was younger, and unfortunately he passed away from it. A friend of mine has also had leukaemia, twice now - he had a bone marrow transplant and is now in remission again

The Anthony Nolan Trust - www.anthonynolan.org.uk For the same reasons above. Because of this, I registered as a bone marrow donor with the trust a year or two ago. They do some amazing work and I'm hoping that one day I'll be found a suitable donor for someone that needs a transplant

KidsOut - www.kidsout.org.uk This is a charity for disadvantaged children that I've supported through my fundraising for The Italian Job. I've been fortunate to meet with the chief executive of the trust, who took the time to show us the kind of work that they do and where the money goes. We also got to know him during the Italian Job, as he took part - he also came along to the TG run last year (though he was in a Golf, not a MINI!)

Like I say, just a few ideas Smile

Nice one Ian! thumbs up You are a true inspiration! Well done! clap
I wouldn't know where to start with charities as there are so many! I have given to local charities and helped on events etc in the past!
I would say yours are very good choices and would back you on these! I would think also although that Italian Job charity looks more fun then work! I bet it is hard work in reality! A lot of driving can be exhausting! And a great cause too! thumbs up

During the AGM the concensus was to support a local Surrey hospice, Dave knew of one in Farnham, Gill had one and so did Chris. I am sure they will be posting up websites soon. It would be lovely for a Surrey based club to support something local.

Hospices should be in the mix but wasn't it just a local charity, not necessarily a hospice?

Stand corrected James you are right it was ageed to be a local charity not necessarily a hospice - just remember all the hospice names being discussed. I'll silent now as don't know any Surrey based charities.

I was under the impression that although a hospice was mentioned, I think that all members should get to decide which charity and which charity type we support this year. We will wait until all the suggestion are in and make a sensible poll about it Smile

The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham is a worthy cause, Surrey based too.

I'd also go for Help the Heroes and Cancer Research.

As I'm not a local, I can't really help with any in and around Surrey, I just posted those to try and give a few ideas - I might try and do a bit of Googling though and if I come across any I'll pm you James Smile I'm more than happy to help organise anything with any charities if you want me to though, just let me know Smile

Glad to see this is getting sorted. The sooner we can decide on a charity, the sooner we can force you lot to get your hands in your pockets and starting giving! Anyone know where to get hold of a charity box pot so I can rattle it at you guys on runs?

once we decide which charity to support, if we contact them, they should be able to give us a couple of collecting boxes Smile I got some for my Anthony Nolan fundraising and some from KidsOut for The Italian Job fundraising Smile
