PostSubject: splintered scoop...   17th September 2014, 20:46

Anyone else had issues with their scoop, especially a chrome scoop, becoming damaged due to engine/turbo heat? mine has begun to crack badly, despite me having fitted the recommended heat shield?!?

any suggestions for a fix/remedy?

thanks in advance Smile

Never on my 3 but they were all painted......

I have heard of warping though but not splitting!

Is your slot fully closed or open? On the JCW it is semi opened up and there is no heat shield!

I'd take a photo for you but it's at the doctors......

slot fully closed? do you mean the grill behind the scoop?

I think the heat shield is intended to prevent warping, but I'd not heard of splitting before either Sad

Yes, on mine it's open and no heat shield although you could make toast with the heat that comes out...

Mine is open, not sure if it was like that from factory or when they did the works conversion, but I don't recall paying for a scoop...

Is it an OEM scoop Lee?

I did wonder why there was even a grill - it isn't fully open and if something is going to fly in there it would anyway?! maybe it would be worth removing it...

...seems odd that it gets that hot though?!

Yes, it is an OEM scoop - makes it slightly more annoying that it's happened ?!

If OEM then take it in under warranty, it could have had a flaw from new!

I seem to recall buying it from minigenuineparts.co.uk - I'm guessing I'll get told to speak to them??

You probably would have to speak to them, but from what I've heard they are a reputable company.

I think it's shut on the r56 because, unlike the r53 that used it for the intercooler, it's only really for looks. Having a gaping hole would essentially mean rain and so on will fly in making your engine messy, and water could get on the hot bits and turn to steam, meaning some customers will bring it in claiming it's overheating. I can't see a problem with opening some of it though, but I may avoid opening all of it - especially if you like a clean engine! Either way though, if you modify it, you'll invalidate the warranty...

I didn't get my sport aerial from my dealer but when it had a crack it the base I went in and they changed it......

JCW is partially open, so having a OEM JCW scoop should be ok, although isn't yours out of warranty Lee?
