Oh no - my mini has been totally fine up till today

I noticed it a little yesterday but today its a bit worse

When I turn the steering wheel it will knock in a few places, like when you do a full lock it knocks like 4 times and never noticed it before

What does this mean?

Shall I call the RAC out?

Help!!!!!!!!!! Sad

Costly? Would the RAC man know if it was this?

Got this from MINI2:

The clunk or clicking noise when turning the wheel in low speed situations such as parking is caused by a dry or failing bearing and rotary coupler in the upper steering column assembly. The rotary coupler is the part that allows all the wiring coming from the steering wheel (Airbag, stereo controls, cruise control and horn wires) to rotate when the steering is turned and to keep all the cables in place inside the column. Greasing or oiling the upper column bearing often gives a fix but not always longterm. (see separate thread on how to do this).
MINI in early 2003 issued a new revised upper steering column / rotary coupler assembly with new part numbers. NOTE: If you have a 2001/2002 MINI both upper and lower steering column assemblies MUST BE REPLACED as the new upper column is not backwards compatible with the old lower steering column assembly (Differences in the splines). Also if you have an Auto the steering column is different from manual models due to the electric shift lock feature. The repair / fitting takes about 2-3 hours garage labour and the current parts prices from BMW are Upper column £163 +vat, Lower column £73 + vat (Total parts £280 approx. inc. vat).
Dismantling and fitting is detailed for DIYers in the MINI Haynes manual.
(The MINI steering column is made by NSK Steering Systems Europe Ltd. of Coventry, West Midlands CV6 6PA.)
For BMW part numbers and exploded diagrams see realoem.com)
Despite the modified parts it seems it is not unknown for later post 2003 columns to start clunking!
As you have a 2005 MINI it should only need the upper column replacing.

It's a common problem. I noticed a almost notchy feeling in mine ages ago. About 18 months ago probably, it comes and goes though so I haven't worried about it. Doesn't make a noise though.

Hope you get it sorted cheaply! There's a MINI specialist in Dorking that may be able to help. Another member has just taken hers there so we'll see how she gets on! Smile

RAC guy could possibly tell! But there were some issues with the steering coloumns /racks on early MINI's if I remember correctly. Don't know the full details but there were a number of issues with them!
Well CV joints are fairly straightforward for any normal garage to fix! What the costs would be I don't know! You will have to get some quotes!

Here are some links from other forums regards steering knocking.

All I would say is it's not the end of the world if you don't go to MINI. That's just my opinion but I would only go there if I had no other choice!

Its annoying you have to start the engine before the steering works as its harder to hear the knocks when you turn it with it running!
