No second gear!
Either won't go in at all or grinds in with a bit of force! Is a new gear box looking likely? And how am I looking at paying for a new one??

What year is your car if it before July 04 it will have a midland 5 speed gear box after july 04 they changed to Getrag 5 speed gear box
Midland gearboxes had lots of problems, you can retro fit a Getrag but it's a lot of work and parts.
Rebuild kits are easy to get hold of from eBay there about £250 Mark or a recon or a secondhand gear box around the £350 to £400
But it still means you strip out the gear box do the job and refit it

Does it go in to gear ok when the engine is not running or does feel notchy

But first I would get someone to check the linkages and gear change cables first then
change the gearbox oil and see if you have a lot of metal in it.
How does the clutch pedal feel does it feel soft or spongy
