Went out in the MINI and there is no second gear!! It either crunches and grinds in gear with a bit of force or doesnt go in at all!! .. Is it looking likely that I am going to need a new gear box ?!

What year is your car if it before July 04 it will have a midland 5 speed gear box after july 04 they changed to Getrag 5 speed gear box Midland gearboxes had lots of problems, you can retro fit a Getrag but it's a lot of work and parts. Rebuild kits are easy to get hold of from eBay there about £250 Mark or a recon or a secondhand gear box around the £350 to £400 But it still means you strip out the gear box do the job and refit it Does it go in to gear ok when the engine is not running or does feel notchy But first I would get someone to check the linkages and gear change cables first then change the gearbox oil and see if you have a lot of metal in it. How does the clutch pedal feel does it feel soft or spongy

Hi ya Ok sound like you have a Getrag gearbox there normaly good ish If the gear box is not noisy when your driving It, and all the other gears work ok I would get the gear change linkages and cables checked first sometime the mounting bracket that mounts to the gearbox and hold the cables comes loose. You may have a bad cable.

Little update; MINI will need a new gearbox! Dad took MINI to a number of garages today just to be sure it needed replacing and to get a good price! All quoted around £600-£800 and have advised that I get a new clutch plate at the same time to save money in future! After hearing that price I was pretty speechless! Luckily a friend of my dad has sorted a deal with his local garage for it to be done at £350-£450!? This seems much more realistic to me.. All booked in tomorrow! & Fresh gearbox for Sunday

I know what BMW charge for a new clutch. I had to have the flywheel replaced as well and that was 4 times the price for the cost of the parts alone.

...she's still at the garage and will be for a few more hours as while changing the gear box, they said that the clutch was 'low' so will also need replacing. so frustrating as i am on a low income

When Bumble broke down, the roadside recovery guy diagnosed it was the gear selector but it was the clutch and flywheel. Are the symptoms to those individual faults similar?

Yeah that's why I am getting it done even if I am having to dig deep.. Saves digging deeper in future! But she should be home within the hour

As Dave says, by the time you get the gearbox out you're 95% of the way to the clutch so a no brainer.
