Happy birthday Mini!
"Happy birthday Mini! On 26th August 1959, motoring history was made. Exactly 60 years ago, the first Mini was launched to the public and its creator, Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis (above), stood proudly alongside to show the world his – and the British Motor Corporation‘s – answer to the bubble cars. As we all know, the way we looked at small cars, and what they were capable of, changed in that one single moment."

Mini production – how many?
"Ian Nicholls of AROnline unravels the Mini production data to try and come up with a definitive number of Minis built. He finds more questions than answers – but it looks like more than six million of all types were made. In terms of sheer volume, the original Alec Issigonis-designed Mini is the most successful British car of all time, with an official figure of around 5.3 million being produced between 1959 and 2000. Most of these were produced by the Longbridge plant, which manufactured the Mini throughout the little car’s lifetime. However, even the official figures differ. Chris Rees, in his book ‘Complete Classic Mini 1959-2000’, gives a figure of 5,378,776, supplied by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. Jon Pressnell, in his book ‘Mini – The Definitive History’, has a total of 5,387,862, as supplied by MG Rover. This is a difference of 9086. The difference between the two sets of figures appears to start in 1977......"

Launch of the Mini - 1959 | Movietone Moment | 26 August 1959
On this day in 1959 the iconic ‘Mini’ car made its debut under two names; ‘Austin Seven’ and ‘Morris Mini-Minor’. By 1962, both simply became known as the ‘Mini’ – ‘truly a people’s car’. Here’s how Movietone reported on the launch.
The British Motor Corporation's "Mini-Minor". The 850 cc engine is mounted across the car, in both versions of this newcomer. In fact there's hardly any difference between Morris and Austin "Minis". The cost of round about five-hundred is mentioned. Performance is said to include a top-speed of seventy miles an hour, and should cruise at fifty-five miles to the gallon.
