Does anyone have any recommendations for a generic one rather than the £50 odd pound one from dealers?

No such thing I'm afraid Gilly. Has to be the dealers and even then I was majorly disappointed with the sound quality I stopped using it.

Is it new with media? They always were included although heard of lots of dealer who tried to charge for one!

Came with the clubman & countryman but I only have a 4s, but the plus side I only pay £8 a month

Sheldon came with one 4 years ago but that was also for iPhone 4s.

Failing all that, I found mine yesterday, which you can have. I have both types fro reasons I don't remember

Yes they do charge as I keep an old iPhone 3 pluged in hidden in glove compartment just for emergencies and as a tracker.

I need to get myself upto date, ie get the kids to put some music onto a usb stick. Think I will ask one of them to do that for me as a Christmas pressie!
The Countryman has Connect on it and I want to have a play but you can't use it without the y cable apparently. Asked the Dealers very nicely if they would give me one with the MINI but to no avail!

Just to add to this....

I went into Mini & bit the bullet today. £42.80 for a Y cable for the media pack/connect/visual boost.

Its well worth the money... my cheap eBay one always stopped and started, refused to read etc.

This one works perfectly, I get album art at all times and even videos when the handbrake is on.

I dont plug the iPhone se into it, I use the bluetooth for the phone and it stays in pocket. I use the cable to hardwire an iPod mini.

The 3.5mm jack plug socket is very loose and causes a drop out in quality unless its plugged perfectly, ill hook that out when I get time and see if its fixable. This may be the reason some find sound quality poor? As its excellent when plugged correctly.

Software update next on the to do list..... but the cable is worth the money over the bay specials.

i would have to agree with you too.. couple of years ago i did the same and got a brilliant copy from e-bay.. worked for a bit then starting getting funny, not registering etc. so i bought the genuine and worked every time. had it for like 4 years now and still no issues.

Is there any way to extend the cable. I have the mini one however it's really short?

Where are you trying to get it to?

After the Y join you can extend it, so you'll need a female to male 3.5mm jack plug for the sound and a USB extension cable with the female USB at one end and the male at the other.

Failing finding those cables you can get couplers that are double female connection plugs so you can extend using a standard USB and a standard 3.5mm jack, but I would do it on the iPod side of the Y joint.
